ASEAN-Korea Migration Network

Under Program 1 of the project, two International Experts Meetings will be organized in order to present and discuss common issues and concerns regarding international migration. Ultimately, the Program 1 aims to establish and maintain a network of experts on migration that will function as a think tank to provide strategic advice specifically on intra-regional migration in the ASEAN-Korea region.

Expected participants of the meetings are experts from government or private organisations and researchers of international migration or migration and development issues in ASEAN and Korea.

1st International Experts Meeting

During the Post-2015 Summit in September, the United Nation’s 193 Member States unanimously adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This wide-ranging agenda is comprised of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) that resulted from more than two years of negotiations and consultations among and with stakeholders from Member State delegations, UN agencies, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations, the private sector and civil society.

For the first time, migration is included in the global development framework. This milestone is in recognition to the integral role and immense contribution of well-managed migration to sustainable development.

In view of this, the theme of the 1st International Experts Meeting is on “Fostering Intra-regional Cooperation on Migration towards Achieving Sustainable and Inclusive Development.”

Specifically, the objectives of the meeting are:

  • To identify and to outline the migration-related SDGs and its respective targets and indicators and how ASEAN and Korea could measure and succeed in each target – with focus on targets 10.7 Planned and Well-Managed Migration Policies and 17.18 Data Disaggregation including Migratory Status;
  • To examine current migration trends and issues as well as share various policies and initiatives relevant to migration and development of each country;
  • To explore potential areas of intra-regional cooperation on migration-development nexus;
  • To kick-start the establishment of a network of experts on migration that will function as a think tank in order to discuss how to operate and vitalize the ASEAN-Korea Migration Network; and
  • To outline the preliminary framework of the 2nd International Experts Meeting and the other two programs of the project.

2nd International Experts Meeting

The 2nd International Experts Meeting will be conducted upon the completion of all the programs of the project.

Specifically, the objectives of the meeting are:

  • To discuss further actions in order to operate and manage effectively the “ASEAN-Korea Migration Network” towards its sustainability and vitalization
  • To evaluate the results of programs 2 and 3
  • To draw up measures to develop the ASEAN-Korea Migration Network as a think tank on fostering cooperation among ASEAN and Korea on addressing migration and development related issues and concerns
